Neisha Crosland
Quattrofoglie e Croci Mosaic

This quatrefoil cross mosaic is a faithful copy of a mosaic found at a Roman villa. Split irregular tesserae of Turkish Black marble and Italian white limestone are set with lime mortar. De Ferranti’s recreations of ancient Roman mosaics are made by hand, using the same materials and tools as the originals. The intention is to retain the hand-worked irregularity and material depth associated with historic floors. The mosaic studio can also apply the same ancient techniques to contemporary designs, allowing the classical language of the Mediterranean Mosaic Collection to be adapted where a project requires a different scale or composition.

Quatrefoil Cross Mosaic in a Compartmented Field

Quattrofoglie e Croci is organised as a grid of pale stone compartments outlined by darker tesserae. Within each square, a four-leaf or cross-like motif establishes a second layer of repetition. The photographed surface also carries visible tonal variation and areas of aged character. As a quatrefoil cross mosaic, it balances floral suggestion with a disciplined geometric structure.

The circular lattice of Interlocking Rosette Field offers a softer curvilinear repeat, while Labirinto e Fiori Mosaic combines geometry with explicit floral details. For related floor and material references, explore Pavements, Pavimenti & Flooring and Stone & Marble Mosaics.

Grid Alignment and Pattern Continuity

The square grid should be coordinated with the room dimensions so complete motifs remain legible along important sight lines. Review samples for tessera irregularity, limestone tone, darker line work and the overall scale of the repeat. Where the pattern meets thresholds or another surface, decide whether to terminate on a full compartment or introduce a separate border. Exterior and pool applications need project-specific installation review.
