This gold fan mosaic uses shimmering fish-scale forms artistically selected and placed into a harmonious repeating ensemble. Mosaics were more central to Byzantine culture than to that of Western Europe. Byzantine church interiors were generally covered with golden mosaics. Mosaic art flourished in the Byzantine Empire from the 6th to the 15th centuries. Gold Fan Mosaic A is organised as overlapping fan or fish-scale arcs built from small tesserae in yellow gold, ochre, beige and deeper brown. The tonal range prevents the surface from reading as one flat metallic field. Darker interstices mark the meeting points between fans, while repeated curved bands create upward movement.

For a lighter interpretation of the same family, Gold Fan Mosaic B combines gold with white tesserae. Fiore Byzantino Gold & Blue uses a more botanical repeat.
