This cat and chicken micromosaic recreates a kinetic Roman hunting scene through hundreds of tiny hand-set tesserae. The composition is full of movement: a cat mid-strike, a bird in flight and natural motifs that pull the eye across the surface. Inspired by a celebrated mosaic from the House of the Faun at Pompeii, now in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, the panel uses tightly packed tesserae to achieve painterly shading, crisp linework and a richly textured field.
