Medievalissimo – Lion Roundel Tile (Yellow on Terracotta) (37A)

This yellow lion tile sets a bold heraldic animal against a warm terracotta ground, contained within a roundel and balanced by compact corner ornaments. The reduced palette gives the design the immediacy of a medieval sign or seal, while speckling, pigment movement and fired variation soften the graphic outline. It offers a warmer alternative to high-contrast black and cream medieval decoration.

Yellow Lion Tile on Terracotta

Medieval tilemakers relied heavily on local clay, mineral colour and the behaviour of glaze in the kiln. Red and buff bodies provided an economical, durable foundation, while contrasting slip or coloured decoration made animals and arms visible across church, monastic and domestic pavements. Lions were particularly effective because their profile could be compressed into a square or circular compartment without losing its identity. In this tile, the yellow figure appears almost illuminated against the earthen background, and the enclosing ring gives it the presence of a medallion rather than a continuous all-over pattern.

For a cooler and more dramatic companion, the cream Lion Roundel reverses the tonal balance on a dark ground.

The Barrel in Verdigris introduces blue-green colour while retaining the collection’s emblematic structure. In other material families, the Quattrofoglie Border Terra shares an earthen colour direction, and the Medievale Grande marble floor offers a larger-scale interpretation of historic geometric organisation.

Colour Balance and Setting Out

Use the yellow lion tile individually where the lion should act as a sign, or repeat it to produce a disciplined heraldic field. Terracotta neighbours can create a quiet tonal continuation, whereas darker borders will sharpen each roundel. Samples should be reviewed under the project’s actual lighting because the relationship between yellow pigment, clay and glaze can change with illumination. Confirm orientation, joint width and the planned balance of plain and decorated units before ordering the full quantity.
