Medieval tilemakers relied heavily on local clay, mineral colour and the behaviour of glaze in the kiln. Red and buff bodies provided an economical, durable foundation, while contrasting slip or coloured decoration made animals and arms visible across church, monastic and domestic pavements. Lions were particularly effective because their profile could be compressed into a square or circular compartment without losing its identity.
