Rosso Francia marble belongs to the celebrated family of rare historic red marbles from Caunes-Minervois and the wider Languedoc marble region of southern France. Also known through closely related names including Rouge Griotte, Rouge du Roi and Rouge du Roy, these stones are admired for a deep cherry-red to crimson ground, white calcite markings, golden veining and distinctive fossil-like patterning.

The name Griotte refers to the colour of the Morello cherry, while Rouge du Roi reflects royal French associations. Red marble from Caunes-Minervois became especially important in seventeenth and eighteenth-century France, where it was used for fireplaces, columns, wall linings, furniture tops, floors, churches and palace interiors. Historic quarry sources record its presence at Versailles.

With its saturated colour and strong French provenance, Rosso Francia is especially suited to statement panels, bathrooms, bar tops, fireplace surrounds, floors, furniture and decorative slabs.

The deep red field of Rosso Francia marble can be paired conceptually with Sarrancolin, whose Pyrenean palette combines ochre, cream, red and grey, or Campan Grand Mélange, which introduces green and pink movement. Planning Fossil and Calcite Markings

The featured piece shows a dense crimson ground interrupted by pale fossil-like inclusions and narrow white calcite veins. Review the actual material before cutting so that larger pale markings are positioned deliberately within panels, fireplace elements or furniture. Where several pieces meet, dry layout helps distribute the strongest white areas and maintain a balanced red field.
