Rosso Francia
Rouge Griotte and Rosso Francia, also known as Rouge du Roi or Rouge du Roy, belong to the celebrated family of rare historic red marbles from Caunes-Minervois and the wider Languedoc marble region of southern France. Admired for their deep cherry-red to crimson ground, white calcite markings, golden veining and distinctive “partridge eye” fossil-like patterning, these stones became closely associated with French royal and ecclesiastical interiors. The name Griotte refers to the colour of the Morello cherry, while Rouge du Roi evokes its royal French associations, including documented use in fireplaces at Versailles. Rather than being primarily a marble of Greek or Roman antiquity, this stone is best understood through the grandeur of 17th and 18th-century France, where richly coloured marbles were used for fireplaces, columns, wall linings, furniture tops, floors, churches, palaces and ceremonial architectural decoration.
With its saturated colour, historic French provenance and unmistakable decorative authority, Rouge Griotte / Rosso Francia is especially suited to luxury interiors, statement panels, bathrooms, bar tops, fireplace surrounds, furniture, decorative slabs and projects where rare marbles, historic provenance and powerful architectural colour are essential.
