Libeccio Antico marble is a rare historic Sicilian stone from the Custonaci marble district in western Sicily, especially associated with the slopes of Monte Cocuccio near Trapani. Also known in historic stone language as Libeccio di Custonaci or a form of soft Sicilian jasper, it is admired for rich polychrome movement in deep red, ochre, ivory, yellow, green and darker mineral tones.

Rather than being primarily associated with Roman antiquity, Libeccio is most strongly linked with medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. It became one of Sicily’s important decorative stones between the late sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, when strongly coloured marble was used in churches, noble interiors, altars, columns, inlay and wall linings.

Its theatrical colour and fractured movement make Libeccio Antico suitable for statement panels, fireplace surrounds, floors, furniture, kitchens and decorative slabs where a project calls for a stone with both regional identity and pronounced natural variation.

Libeccio Antico Marble and Sicilian Polychrome Stone

The closely related Libeccio Policromo offers an even more emphatic polychrome composition. Giallo Siena provides a warmer Tuscan comparison with a clearer yellow ground, while De Ferranti’s Pietre Dure collection shows how coloured marbles can be used compositionally.

Reviewing Colour Before Cutting

The balance of red, ochre, ivory and green can vary considerably across the material. Review current slab imagery or samples before fabrication, particularly for panels and fireplace elements where one dominant colour zone could control the composition. Joint positions should support the natural movement rather than interrupt major colour changes. For smaller cut elements, sample selection is useful to ensure the characteristic polychrome identity is not lost through overly quiet sections.
