Bitter Chocolate is a bituminous brown limestone with a deep chocolate-brown colour, pronounced tonal variation, visible fossil remains and a patina that can read almost like leather. The material originates from limestone that became impregnated with bitumen from underground oil beds over geological time. Its source quarry first operated in the 17th century, closed in the 1930s and was later reopened.

The Character of Bituminous Brown Limestone

Once laid, the stone is given a final coat of oil and then sealed, enriching the brown tones and producing the characteristic leathery surface described by De Ferranti. The result can work in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Bitter Chocolate is typically supplied as tile. Large sizes are rare, although slab and block can also be sourced for carved basins and details such as staircases, friezes and cornicing.

For related brown stones, African Brown Limestone provides a lighter fossil-rich alternative, while Barcelona Brown offers a calmer carboniferous surface in polished or honed finishes. Interior Specification and Surface Review

This bituminous brown limestone is specified for indoor use only. Floors and wall cladding are established applications, with the De Ferranti product record also covering basins, bathrooms, stairs, cut-to-size work and worktops. Samples should be reviewed for tonal range, fossil content and final surface treatment before quantities are confirmed, particularly where pieces from different cuts will meet within one installation.
