Bitter Chocolate Limestone is quarried from a unique geological formation where hard white limestone became gradually impregnated with bitumen from underground oil beds over thousands of years. The result is an extraordinary stone with a deep chocolate colour, layered tonal variation and occasional visible fossil remains that speak to its natural origins.

Historically worked from the 17th century, the quarry was closed in the 1930s and only recently re-opened, making this material both rare and distinctive. The stone is cut into a variety of mosaic formats - from small bricks to larger squares and modular arrangements - allowing for diverse applications and patterns.

Once laid, the surface is treated with a final coat of oil and sealed, enriching the colour and producing a soft, lustrous patina reminiscent of fine leather. Intended for indoor use, Bitter Chocolate Limestone is particularly suited to floors and wall cladding where a sense of depth, tactility and material history is desired.
