This Bitter Chocolate limestone mosaic assortment is crafted from a stone whose deep tones and natural bituminous character create remarkable warmth and depth. Once finished, its appearance can evoke the patina of aged leather.

Bitter Chocolate Limestone comes from a distinctive geological formation where hard white limestone became gradually impregnated with bitumen from underground oil beds over thousands of years. The resulting stone has a deep chocolate colour, layered tonal variation and occasional visible fossil remains that reveal its natural origins.

Historically worked from the 17th century, the quarry was closed in the 1930s and has since been reopened. The stone is cut into a range of mosaic formats, from small bricks to larger squares and modular arrangements, giving the assortment flexibility in pattern and scale. Once laid, the surface is treated with a final coat of oil and sealed, enriching the colour and producing a soft lustrous patina reminiscent of fine leather.

Bitter Chocolate Limestone Mosaic in Modular Formats

The assortment can be coordinated with other material from De Ferranti’s Limestone Collection when a project needs larger-format stone alongside mosaic. For a darker mosaic with metallic contrast, Black Belgian with Bright Gold offers a distinctly different reading of black limestone, while Stone Surfaces with Texture provides further references for tactility and relief.

Interior Specification and Finish

This Bitter Chocolate limestone mosaic is intended for indoor use and is listed for floors, walls, furniture, kitchens, leisure settings, restaurants, tabletops and yachts. Polished and honed finishes are shown on the product page. Because the material’s tonal depth, fossil markings and surface character are inherent to the stone, samples should be reviewed before specification. Confirm format mix, grout tone, sealing regime and maintenance expectations for the intended setting, particularly where the mosaic is used across a larger continuous area.
