The Appoggi saffron terracotta tile is hand-painted in Southern Italy with a simple leaning, poly-directional decoration in saffron-orange over an off-white ground. The module can be turned to create several combinations, giving the installer scope to form regular repeats, directional bands or more animated arrangements. Its delicately aged background and terracotta body support the design’s Sicilian origin and 19th-century character.

Sunlit Colour in the Appoggi Saffron Terracotta Tile

Saffron, ochre and yellow-orange tones are closely associated with the warm palette of Sicilian ceramics. In this Appoggi colourway, the hue is used sparingly as line rather than as a solid field. The off-white ground keeps the pattern clear, while small changes in brushwork and surface tone make the repeat feel handmade rather than printed.

The warmer Appoggi Red and White can be combined with it for a closely related two-colour scheme, while Assunta Saffron develops the palette into a far more ornate four-tile repeat. Elsewhere at De Ferranti, Golden Citron MC29 offers a lively plain glaze with yellow-green depth, and Neisha Crosland’s Marigold in Imperial Yellow provides botanical movement in a strong sunlit colour.

Composing a Saffron Patterned Surface

This handpainted terracotta tile may be considered for floors, walls, bathrooms, kitchens, staircases, fireplace surrounds, tabletops, hospitality interiors and warm-climate exterior areas, subject to project specification. Its rotational flexibility makes advance layout planning important. A dry assembly will reveal how the angled motif crosses grout joints and whether the intended composition should remain consistent or change direction at borders, corners and thresholds. Samples also allow the aged ground and saffron tone to be judged beside surrounding stone, plaster, timber or metal finishes.
