Inspired by fifteenth-century German damask, this gesso damask wall panel uses burnished relief over a tortoise-shell-effect background to create an unusually intricate decorative surface. The existing design can be hung in a wallcovering manner or supplied over a sturdy base, depending on project requirements. Gesso is principally used here for interior wall panels and other vertical applications, with custom design and colouring available as part of the collection.

Gesso Damask Wall Panel and Historic Relief

The design is exceptionally dense. Scrolling foliage, flower heads, pointed leaves and interlacing stems form a near-continuous field of raised ornament over a mottled amber, russet and dark brown ground. Close inspection reveals fine crackle and tonal variation within the relief, while from a distance the composition reads more like richly worked damask or embossed leather.

Gesso relief also belongs to a long decorative-arts tradition. Renaissance pastiglia, for example, used applied or moulded gesso ornament on furniture and smaller objects, sometimes painted or gilded. The present design is not presented as a reproduction of historic pastiglia, but its raised surface sits within a recognisable lineage of worked gesso decoration.
