These classic sponged Delft wall tiles were first made in the 18th Century. Used at skirting level in traditional houses, they kept damp at bay better than timber.

Despite their antiquity, they look amazingly contemporary. These tiles are hand-painted using sponging and marbling techniques.

Sponged Delft Wall Tiles with Painterly Variation

The Sponged design combines dense rust-red marks with an ivory ground and occasional black accents. Larger rounded forms sit beside small droplets, fragmented outlines and loosely feathered passages, producing a highly animated surface without relying on a formal repeating motif.

Fine crackle and subtle irregularities are visible across the glaze, contributing another layer of detail when the tile is viewed closely. Each tile carries its own distribution of colour, so an assembled installation reads as a continuous field of painterly movement rather than a sequence of identical modules.

The warm red, cream and black palette can bring depth to interior wall fields, skirting-height courses, splashbacks and framed decorative panels, where suitable and subject to project specification. Several pieces should be reviewed together when planning a larger area, allowing densely coloured tiles and more open compositions to be balanced across the layout.

Within the Delft collection, Sponged Dark offers a deeper interpretation of the same historic decorative approach. Marbre Burnt Umber provides a related earthy palette through longer, more fluid lines of marbling.

Sponged Decoration Beyond Delft
