These classic dark sponged Delft tiles were first made in the 18th Century. Used at skirting level in traditional houses, they kept damp at bay better than timber.

Despite their antiquity, they look amazingly contemporary. These tiles are hand-painted using sponging and marbling techniques.

Dark Sponged Delft Tiles with Dense Colour

Sponged Dark is dominated by deep brown and near-black areas, threaded with oxblood red and narrow channels of ivory. The darker pigments gather into broad, irregular forms, while smaller red marks and pale fissures break up the surface and reveal the layered nature of the decoration.

The close relationship between sponging and marbling creates a surface that can recall brecciated stone without reproducing a particular natural material. Fine crackle and tonal shifts become more apparent at close range, adding detail within the larger abstract composition.

Because the balance of dark ground, red pigment and ivory spacing changes across each tile, several pieces should be reviewed together when planning an installation. The denser examples can provide visual weight, while tiles with more visible ivory can introduce contrast and separation across the field.

Subject to project specification, these dark sponged Delft tiles may be considered for interior feature walls, chimney breasts, splashbacks, skirting-height courses and framed decorative panels. The colourway can coordinate with pale stone, dark timber, aged metals and quieter ceramic fields.
