The Sclastica sponged terracotta tile combines red, blue, green and off-white geometric decoration in a design of Neapolitan origin. Applied with a sponged technique in a Southern Italian artisan studio, it is described as 19th century in character and influenced by Oriental pattern. The method gives the colour a softer, more varied edge than a precisely outlined painted motif.

Sponging deposits pigment unevenly, allowing areas of colour to gather, fade and overlap across the terracotta surface. In Sclastica, this creates a lively relationship between the geometric structure and the less controlled texture of the application. Red, blue and green are balanced by off-white passages, producing a polychrome field that remains clear when repeated over a wall or floor.

Within the Italianate range, Tindaro uses the same sponged approach with a black and white chequerboard, blue pencil line and green decoration. Vita develops another polychrome composition of Sicilian and Neapolitan origin with Oriental inspiration. Specifying Sponged Italian Terracotta

Sclastica may be considered for interior floors and walls, kitchens, bathrooms, residential projects and restaurant settings, with warm-climate exterior use subject to specification. The hand-applied surface should be reviewed through several samples because tonal density will vary. A dry layout can help balance the strongest red, blue and green passages across the installation and establish how the repeat meets corners, thresholds and fitted elements. Grout should support the geometry without flattening the softer sponged edges.
