Vita

The Vita polychrome terracotta tile combines rose, blue, yellow, black, green and off-white in a hand-painted floral geometric design. Produced in a Southern Italian artisan studio, it is described as Sicilian and Neapolitan in origin, 19th century in character and inspired by Oriental pattern. The broad palette creates a richly layered surface while the geometry keeps the composition ordered.

Cultural Exchange in the Vita Polychrome Terracotta Tile

Southern Italian ceramics developed through sustained exchange between Mediterranean workshops, trade routes and imported decorative ideas. Vita reflects this movement without reducing the design to a single source. Floral forms, coloured geometry and dark outlines are brought together through visible brushwork, creating a tile that feels narrative and collected rather than mechanically uniform.

Within the Italianate range, Sclastica offers another Oriental-influenced Neapolitan design using a sponged application, while Tindaro introduces a black and white chequerboard with blue and green detail. Elsewhere at De Ferranti, the Cross-Cultural Tile Study Collection brings several ceramic traditions together as a design resource, and the Ottoman Tulip Vine Tile provides a more specific example of stylised floral ornament within Islamic tile art.

It forms part of the Italianate Handpainted Tiles Collection.

Composing a Multicoloured Italian Surface

Vita may be considered for interior floors and walls, kitchens, bathrooms, residential projects and restaurant settings, with warm-climate exterior use subject to specification. Its varied palette can connect several materials or colours within one scheme, but a sample panel should be reviewed to ensure surrounding finishes do not compete with the pattern. A dry layout will help distribute the strongest blue, yellow, black, green and rose passages evenly and establish how the geometry meets thresholds, corners and fitted elements.
