The Lucia red terracotta tile is hand-painted in a Southern Italian artisan studio with complex white decoration over a red ground that has been delicately aged. De Ferranti records the design as Sicilian in origin and 19th century in character. Four tiles meet to complete the flowing repeat, creating a larger ornamental pattern with warmth, rhythm and visible artisan variation.

Red gives the background greater visual weight, while the white linework opens and lightens the composition. Across the four-tile unit, curved forms connect through the joints and create a pattern that sits between floral scrollwork and geometry. Slight changes in pigment, brush edge and alignment are characteristic of a tile made and painted by hand rather than mechanically reproduced.

For other red-led Italianate surfaces, Grazia Red offers a different handpainted composition, while Rosellina Red introduces floral scrolls and corner roses. Elsewhere at De Ferranti, Neisha Crosland’s Pollen in Orange and Red provides a more graphic terracotta repeat, and Can-Can in Clementine develops a lighter botanical pattern within a related warm palette.

Red Sicilian Pattern for Project Schemes

Lucia Red may be considered for feature floors, walls, kitchens, bathrooms, staircases, fireplace surrounds, tabletops and hospitality interiors, with selected warm-climate exterior use subject to specification. Because the motif relies on four tiles, setting out should preserve complete units around central sightlines and fitted elements. Reviewing a sample panel will help determine grout colour, orientation and how the aged red surface interacts with timber, plaster, stone and metal finishes.
