The Lucia black terracotta tile is hand-painted in Southern Italy with complex, fluid decoration in shades of white over a black ground. Its background and tile body are deliberately aged, softening the contrast and allowing occasional warmth from the terracotta beneath to influence the surface. De Ferranti identifies the design as Sicilian in origin and 19th century in character. Four tiles join to form the complete repeat.

The design is more curvilinear than a simple geometric field. White forms move across the dark ground and connect at the tile joints, creating a larger composition that becomes fully legible only when the four-tile unit is assembled. Hand painting introduces small variations in line, tone and registration, while the antiqued finish prevents the black surface from appearing flat or newly manufactured.

Lucia Black can be used for decorative floors, walls, kitchens, bathrooms, staircases, fireplace surrounds, restaurant interiors and warm-climate exterior areas, subject to specification. Setting out should begin with complete four-tile units so the flowing motif remains balanced around focal points and fitted elements. A sample panel will clarify grout width, aged surface variation and the relationship between the white brushwork, black ground and visible terracotta character.
