The Appoggi blue terracotta tile is made and painted by hand in Southern Italy, using a leaning, poly-directional motif in blue over an off-white ground. Turning the module alters the flow of the linework, so a single design can create orderly repeats, looser compositions or directional borders. De Ferranti identifies the pattern as Sicilian in origin and 19th century in character. The softly aged background and tile body are integral to its appearance.

Blue has a longstanding place within Mediterranean ceramic decoration, but this design is quieter than a densely painted majolica panel. Its strength lies in the balance between open ground and gestural geometry. Brush variation, softened edges and gentle changes in the off-white field give the handpainted terracotta tile an established, time-worn quality without obscuring the repeat.
