The crocus was central to the celebrated wall paintings from Xeste 3 at Akrotiri, the Bronze Age settlement on Thera, modern Santorini. Preserved beneath volcanic pumice and ash, these paintings are now among the defining exhibits associated with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira.
