Saffron Picker fresco tiles are inspired by the ‘Saffron Pickers’ on the wall paintings of Thera: polished slip surface, similar technique to that used in Ancient Greek Pottery. These tiles have the aged and weathered look of ancient frescoed walls. Instead of a conventional glaze, they have a satin finish, fired to 1045°C for colour stability, and are sealed to ensure they are impervious to water and grease.

The composition presents a saffron-gathering figure in profile, surrounded by crocus plants and carrying a patterned basket. Dark curled hair, blue and ivory clothing, fine red outlines and muted mineral colour stand against a chalky, weathered ground. Arranged across a twelve-tile panel, the figure retains the visible joints and irregular markings that give these Akrotiri figure tiles their fresco-like character.

The softened finish prevents the image from reading as a bright pictorial mural. Instead, it has the quieter presence of an excavated wall painting and can form a focal panel within restrained ceramic or plaster-like surfaces.

The Saffron Gatherers of Thera

The source belongs to the wall-painting tradition of Akrotiri, the Bronze Age settlement on Thera, modern Santorini. In Xeste 3, figures collecting and offering crocus flowers formed part of an elaborate painted sequence. Pumice and ash from the Theran eruption preserved the paintings, and celebrated Saffron Gatherers scenes are now displayed at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira.

Planning a Figurative Tile Panel

The full image should be set out before installation so that the figure, basket, crocuses and rocky ground align across the joints. Grout colour should support the aged ivory background without obscuring the drawn outlines. The Saffron Picker fresco tiles may form a self-contained decorative panel or be incorporated into a broader wall treatment.
