Akrotiri red stripe tiles are fresco tiles inspired by the wall paintings of Thera: polished slip surface, similar technique to that used in Ancient Greek pottery. These tiles have the aged and weathered look of ancient frescoed walls. Instead of a conventional glaze, they have a satin finish, fired to 1045°C for colour stability, and are sealed to ensure they are impervious to water and grease.

Akrotiri Red Stripe Tiles with Weathered Ivory Fields

Earthy red horizontal bands run across the upper portion of the decorated tiles, separated by narrow ivory lines and set above a chalky off-white field. The disciplined stripe provides a strong border without figurative ornament, while the quieter field tiles allow the dry, plaster-like surface to remain prominent.

These Thera red border tiles carry visible tonal variation, softly distressed markings and irregular traces across the ivory ground. The satin finish limits reflection and gives the red bands the softened character of pigment applied to an old plaster wall.

The decorated tiles can form a continuous upper or lower border, frame a panel or establish a horizontal datum across a wall.
