The Bernhardt Art Nouveau tile forms part of De Ferranti’s Art Nouveau Collection of handpainted ceramic panels.

In the spirit of reviving historical decorative movements, our Art Nouveau Collection comprises 8 handpainted 49 cm square ceramic panels of sixteen 11cm square tiles in vivid shades of orange, yellow and green.

Bernhardt Art Nouveau Tile Design

Bernhardt uses a restrained palette and a flowing linear composition that becomes more complex when repeated. On the individual tile, sweeping black outlines move across a white ground around deep green ribbon-like forms, pale green areas and a small blue accent. When sixteen tiles are assembled, the lines connect across the joints to form mirrored curves, loops and stylised organic shapes.

The curving calligraphic bands relate to the Art Nouveau whiplash line, a visual language seen in the decorative arts of Paris and in the wider Modernisme movement of Barcelona. Although Bernhardt is not a trencadís design, its linked curves and colour share the broader aim found in Gaudí’s work of making ceramic an integral part of the decorative scheme rather than a separate applied detail.

Hand-Painted Ceramic Panels for Interior Projects

The Bernhardt Art Nouveau tile is intended for decorative internal wall applications, including bathrooms, residential interiors, restaurants and commercial settings. It can be used as a framed feature panel, repeated across a larger wall or placed within a quieter field of plain ceramic tiles, depending on the scale and character of the scheme.

Because the composition is created across multiple pieces, the relationship between individual tiles is central to the finished result. The layout should be reviewed before fixing so that the flowing lines continue correctly across the panel. Joint width, grout colour, perimeter treatment and alignment with adjacent materials should also be considered at the sample or mock-up stage.
