Carved Stone – Bas-Relief & High-Relief

Carved stone relief at De Ferranti brings together bas-relief, high-relief and mosaic-inlaid surface work for interiors, courtyards, fireplace surrounds, walling and special commissions. Bas-relief has been used since ancient times to create sculptural pictures. Standing out from its background, the raised image appears to float, an effect used by craftsmen from Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia through to the present day. De Ferranti offers bas relief in carved stone and ceramics to special commission, from an authentic recreation of Ishtar’s Babylonian lions to a whole room clad in contemporary bas relief panels.

Carved Stone Relief for Project-Led Interiors

This collection is best understood as a family of sculptural architectural components rather than a single product type. It includes aged limestone, Rosso Verona marble, black-grey tuff, red terracotta and stone-and-marble mosaic inlay, each bringing a different relationship with light, shadow, colour and texture.

For designers, carved stone relief offers a way to introduce depth without relying on applied decoration. A mask, ram’s head, Roman fragment or serpent motif can become a wall-mounted object, fireplace detail, courtyard feature, inset panel or bespoke surface element, depending on scale, fixing, substrate and finish. The strongest pieces work at more than one distance: sculptural from across a room, tactile and detailed close up.

The category also connects naturally with related De Ferranti material families. For broader stone commissions, explore Architectural Elements in Stone & Marble. For mosaic-led surfaces and inlaid patterns, Mosaics - All Disciplines and Antique Stone Mosaics offer complementary routes into tesserae, pattern and hand-cut surface work.

Specification should always be project-specific. Limestone, marble, tuff and terracotta do not behave identically, and suitability depends on fixing, exposure, cleaning, bedding, finish and installation method. De Ferranti can advise on whether a relief panel, inlaid surface or bespoke commission is appropriate for the intended location.
