Abyss MX417 is a richly textured reactive glaze inspired by deep ocean waters, midnight skies and the
beauty that emerges through the unpredictable chemistry of the kiln. Dark, atmospheric and full of depth, it offers a dramatic interpretation of handmade ceramic colour.
Part of The Blues - Textures Collection, Abyss MX417 has been developed through the collaboration between De Ferranti and AAA - Alvaro Afonso Atelier. Unlike conventional glazed ceramics, this collection explores texture as much as colour, creating surfaces that engage with light, shadow and movement in a far more dynamic way.
To achieve this effect, the glaze is applied to the reverse face of the tile. This technique creates a more textured and irregular surface, encouraging greater variation within the glaze and producing a richer interaction with natural and artificial light. The result is a ceramic surface with exceptional visual depth, where colour appears to shift and evolve as viewing angles and lighting conditions change throughout the day.
Abyss MX417 appears almost black from a distance, yet closer inspection reveals layers of deep cobalt, indigo and midnight blue interwoven with crystalline
formations and subtle glaze movement. Every tile develops its own unique character during firing, ensuring that no two pieces are ever completely identical.
The richness of the glaze makes it particularly suitable for Feature Walls, Bars, Powder Rooms, Fireplace Surrounds, Swimming Pools, Spa Areas, Luxury Bathrooms and Hospitality Interiors. Installed across larger surfaces, the tiles create an immersive and atmospheric effect reminiscent of deep water, polished
and the night sky.
Abyss MX417 embodies the philosophy shared by De Ferranti and Alvaro Afonso Atelier: that truly beautiful materials should reveal new details over time, rewarding both distance and close inspection. The result is a handcrafted ceramic surface with depth, individuality and enduring visual interest.
