Each terracotta piece is fired in traditional wood-burning kilns, resulting in nuanced tonal variation – from soft biscuit and sand through to burnt sienna, rose clay and toasted earth. Smoke shadowing, edge darkening and speckling reveal the unpredictable beauty of true woodfiring. The contrasting stone inserts – chalky, lightly fossilised and creamy in tone – are reminiscent of aged travertine, offering a cool counterpoint to the warmth of the clay.
The fine dark grout line sharpens the geometry, emphasising each hexagon and and allowing the pattern to read clearly from a distance while retaining intimacy up close.
