A threshold as artwork. This bespoke installation transforms an arched opening into a complete iconographic composition, with hand-painted saint panels, gilded halos, and working doors that feel lifted from a quiet monastery corridor.

Commissioned as a full architectural feature, the Iconographic Portal combines large-format icon panels with a painted and gilded arch , creating a cohesive “screen” around a central door set. Finished on aged timber boards, the surface carries deliberate patina , visible grain, and tonal variation, so the work reads as lived-in rather than newly applied.

De Ferranti recreates this tradition using historically informed methods, including plant and mineral pigment palettes and gold detailing, then calibrates the ageing to suit the interior - from softly timeworn to deeply distressed. Each portal is fully customisable: choose the icon figures, border motifs, colour temperature of the gold, panel proportions, and door configuration. Suitable for statement entrances, private chapels, libraries, wine rooms, or any space where the doorway deserves ceremony.
