Neisha Crosland
Quadrato e Quattro Angoli Mosaic

This black and white Roman mosaic is a faithful copy of a mosaic found at a Roman villa, using split irregular tesserae, Turkish black marble, Italian white limestone and lime mortar. De Ferranti’s recreations of ancient Roman mosaics are true not only in their look but also in their detail. They are made by hand using the same materials, tools and techniques as the originals. It is a labour-intensive approach intended to reproduce the character of an important Roman villa or public-building floor. The mosaic studio can also apply these ancient techniques to contemporary designs, creating a deliberate dialogue between historic workmanship and new composition. This design forms part of De Ferranti’s Mediterranean Mosaic Collection.

Black and White Roman Mosaic in Traditional Materials

The composition uses a pale field punctuated by black diamonds and four angular corner elements, with a dark linear border reinforcing the disciplined geometry. The contrast is strong, but the irregular tesserae and lime mortar keep the surface from feeling machine-made. De Ferranti’s Mediterranean Mosaics collection provides the wider context for these classical hand-made works, while Otho Mosaic Border offers a complementary Roman-inspired framing language.

Setting Out an Ancient Roman Mosaic

For a black and white Roman mosaic, final dimensions should be established before production so the repeat, border and corner conditions are resolved as part of the composition. Review representative material to understand the deliberately irregular tesserae, natural colour variation and lime-mortar character. Where the mosaic is specified for floors, swimming pools or warm-climate exterior areas, confirm substrate preparation, drainage where relevant, sealing, slip performance and exposure requirements. Specialist installation is particularly important where historical geometry, borders and transitions need to remain coherent across the finished field.
