Neisha Crosland
Arazzo Mosaic

This El Jem mosaic is a replica of a mosaic displayed at the Archaeological Museum of El Jem. Each stone is carefully selected, cut and assembled by hand, preserving the small-scale variation that gives a hand-laid field its character.

Slight indentations within the mosaic field enhance the surface despite the composition’s apparent simplicity. Circling leaves introduce movement and allow the geometry to float over the handcrafted background, while the small tesserae are deliberately varied rather than mechanically uniform. That controlled irregularity is a quiet detail, but it has a strong effect on the way the field reads at close range.

The composition is especially useful as an example of how classical mosaic language can be reinterpreted without flattening the craft into a rigid repeat. De Ferranti can customise materials and colours and tailor the mosaic to the intended space, allowing the historic reference to inform a project rather than dictate it.

El Jem Mosaic and Classical Pattern

Arazzo sits naturally beside De Ferranti’s Mediterranean Mosaics, where hand-laid pattern and classical references are explored across related designs. The more pictorial Celestial Serpent Circular Mosaic offers a contrasting approach to movement within a defined field, while the wider Mosaics – All Disciplines archive gives context for glass, stone and other mosaic techniques.

Customisation and Setting Out

For an El Jem mosaic specified as a focal panel or repeated field, establish the intended scale, orientation, surrounding borders and junctions before production. Sample review is important where stone colour is being adapted, because changes in tessera tone can alter the clarity of the leaf forms and background geometry. The product is listed for floors, walls and several project applications, including warm-climate exterior areas, but suitability should be confirmed for the chosen material, finish and installation method.
