Neisha Crosland
Matchsticks

Matchsticks limestone tile turns an elementary linear unit into a disciplined stencilled repeat. Neisha Crosland first developed the idea by arranging real matchsticks into formations at her kitchen table, then translating that simple exercise into a pattern capable of travelling across stone. The result is graphic and ordered without losing the slight variation of a hand-applied surface.

Matchsticks forms part of De Ferranti’s ready-to-specify stencilled limestone range, with custom project options available for discussion where the format and material allow.

Matchsticks Limestone Tile and Linear Geometry

The strength of Matchsticks lies in economy. A short line becomes a module, modules become clusters, and the clusters create a larger field that reads differently at close and long range. This is a useful contrast to Radar, where diagonal steps are rearranged into a more kaleidoscopic pattern, and to Parquet on stencilled stone, which borrows the visual authority of a painted wooden floor. Matchsticks is therefore well suited to schemes that need clear geometry without an obviously historic motif.

Controlling the Linear Repeat

Set out several Matchsticks limestone tile modules before installation so the linear clusters meet cleanly at thresholds and corners. Small shifts in the starting point can change where the strongest alignments fall within a room. For a wall, decide whether the pattern should be centred on the elevation or allowed to run more informally beyond the visible edges. Review samples with the chosen grout and adjacent finishes, as a highly contrasting joint can compete with the stencilled lines. The broader Neisha Crosland – Tattoo Series shows how Matchsticks sits alongside more curved and textile-derived motifs. Confirm sealing, substrate, joint width and project suitability with De Ferranti.
