This freshwater shell mosaic, named Quadra Shell, uses finely cut square tesserae to create a pale, iridescent grid suited to refined interior surfaces. Fabulous when combined with white marble. Completely handmade, this finely cut and shaped Quadra (freshwater) shell is carefully set on mesh for ease of installation. Each shell tessera is 10mm, 15mm or 20mm square. Commissions have included walls, vanity unit doors and tabletops. Its uses are endless. Where the budget is restricted we recommend that our clients use shell for borders, dados (chair rails) or as accent tiles.
The current product information describes the freshwater shell as handmade and set on mesh, with square tesserae in 10 mm, 15 mm or 20 mm sizes. Its light colouring works especially well beside white marble, where the shell contributes movement without introducing a strong competing hue. Natural variation means neighbouring pieces will shift in tone and reflectivity rather than forming a flat white field.
Compare Nacre Mother of Pearl, Pinctada shell and Scacchiera shell for related approaches to shell scale, pattern or material combination. The Shells & Mother of Pearl collection places this design within De Ferranti’s wider group of shell mosaics, inlays and veneered surfaces.
Select the tessera size in relation to the scale of the room and adjacent materials. A fine module can read almost textile-like from a distance, while a larger square makes the shell structure more visible. Review several sheets together to assess tonal distribution and mesh junctions, then confirm grout, substrate, edge details and cleaning requirements. Existing commissions include walls, vanity unit doors and tabletops, and the freshwater shell mosaic can also be used selectively for borders or accents.
