This butt jointed nacre mosaic creates a near-continuous Mother of Pearl field by bringing finely cut square shell tesserae tightly together on mesh. Completely handmade, this finely cut and shaped Nacre (mother of pearl) shell is carefully set on mesh for ease of installation. Each shell tessera is 10mm, 15mm or 20mm square. This option is butt-jointed, however we also have an option with a joint . Commissions have included walls, vanity unit doors and tabletops. Its uses are endless. Where the budget is restricted we recommend that our clients use shell for borders, dados (chair rails) or as accent tiles.

The current product information records 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm square tesserae and identifies this as the butt-jointed option. With less visible jointing, the eye reads more of the shell and less of the grid, allowing the nacre to behave as a luminous surface rather than a conventional mosaic pattern. Butt-jointed shell needs careful setting so sheet junctions do not become more visible than the intended internal joints. Review several sheets together, especially where the surface will be seen under raking light. Confirm tessera size, substrate, fixing, edge treatment and cleaning regime.
