This rock crystal Cycladic head was created as a special commission, translating the pared-back language of an ancient marble reference into clear quartz. Its original reference is a marble head from the Greek Cycladic Islands, dated 2700-2500 B.C. and held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Rock Crystal Cycladic Head as a Sculptural Object

The simplified face gives the rock crystal Cycladic head its quiet force. An elongated oval profile, restrained facial modelling and a projecting nose create a form that remains recognisable without surface ornament. In rock crystal, those reduced planes interact with internal fractures, veils and transparent passages, so light becomes part of the composition.

The contrast with the marble source is central to the commission. Marble gives Cycladic sculpture an opaque presence, while clear quartz introduces depth and optical movement. The dark pedestal visible with the piece strengthens that contrast and allows the translucent head and neck to read as one vertical object.
