Rock Crystal

The Greeks once believed that rock crystal objects found high in the mountains might be ice frozen so deeply that it could never melt again. Rock crystal, a transparent variety of quartz, is considered a semi-precious gemstone. Especially in Europe and the Middle East, quartz has been used since antiquity for jewellery and hardstone carving. De Ferranti fashions objects from rock crystal, including tap heads, door knobs, basins, bowls, baths, tiles, vanity tops and tabletops, as well as project-specific commissions.

Rock Crystal Objects and the Hardstone Tradition

Rock crystal has long occupied a distinctive place between geology, sculpture and the decorative arts. Historic collections preserve carved vessels and courtly objects that show how clear quartz could be cut and polished into intricate forms. Its transparency gives carved pieces a particular relationship with light, while the stone retains a visibly mineral character.

Within De Ferranti’s wider Objects & Artifacts collection, rock crystal can be considered alongside sculptural pieces in rare stone, metal and semi-precious materials. For bathroom projects, the Basins collection includes rock crystal among its statement materials, while Baths & Bath Tubs extends the same vocabulary into larger-scale pieces.

Specifying Rock Crystal for Interior Objects

For project specification, scale, form, finish, clarity, internal veiling and the relationship between the crystal and any fittings should be reviewed together. Natural mineral character is part of the visual identity, so individual pieces should be assessed for the intended setting rather than treated as visually uniform. Rock crystal objects can work as focal details, functional fittings or collected decorative pieces, depending on the form and project brief.

For commissions beyond an existing design, De Ferranti can discuss dimensions, setting and material treatment before suitability is confirmed.
