This handpainted parrot tile, “Um Papagaio”, continues the lively narrative tradition of 17th century Portuguese azulejos, where flora and fauna were rendered with theatrical charm and painterly freedom. Inspired by the celebrated panels of the Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira in Lisbon, this tile references the original works attributed to the Amsterdam workshops of Jan van Oort and Willem van der Kloet.

The parrot is depicted in layered washes of olive, moss and deep forest green, punctuated by flashes of warm amber and golden yellow across the breast. Hints of cobalt blue trace the head and wing contours, while delicate black linework defines feathers, eye and claw with expressive clarity. The surrounding foliage – soft sage and muted green – floats against a creamy white tin-glazed ground, allowing the pigments to bloom gently and create subtle tonal halos.

As with all pieces in the Bestiário series, each tile is entirely handpainted. Slight variations in brushstroke, colour density and glaze movement lend authenticity and individuality, echoing the spontaneous character of historic azulejo panels.
