Cosmati Semi-Precious Mosaic

Cosmati Semi-Precious Mosaic, a semi-precious Cosmati, is an expressive irregular mosaic composed of hand-selected semi-precious stones, recalling the richness of historic Cosmati pavements. Fragments of colour, mineral texture and natural form are assembled into a surface that feels both archaeological and contemporary. Cosmati Semi-Precious Mosaic is created from individually chosen pieces of semi-precious stone, each cut to preserve its natural character rather than impose strict geometry. Lapis, agate, jasper, onyx and other hardstones are combined with complementary materials to form a richly varied composition. The irregular layout allows colour, translucency and mineral structure to take precedence, with each fragment framed to enhance contrast and depth.

Semi-Precious Cosmati in Detail

Cosmati Semi-Precious Mosaic emphasises the mosaic side of the Cosmati tradition, using small, varied hardstone pieces to create a dense field of colour and mineral character. Because semi-precious and natural stones can vary in translucency, veining and saturation, the composition should be judged across a representative sample rather than from one isolated fragment.

Related options include Denti di squali Cosmati and Cosmati Cabochon in Red Porphyry, Verde Antico and Giallo Antico, each exploring a different balance of material and geometry. The wider Cosmati – Sacred Geometry in Coloured Stone & Smalti provides additional context for specifying this design as part of a coordinated scheme of floors, wall surfaces or framed decorative elements.

Planning the Surface

The recorded applications include flooring, wall applications, bathrooms, kitchens and fireplace surrounds. For the semi-precious Cosmati, confirm the final scale, colour balance and orientation from samples or shop drawings before installation. Where the composition includes rare marbles, glass, semi-precious material or a deliberately aged finish, natural and hand-worked variation should be treated as part of the approved character rather than as a defect.
