Cocciopesto – Ancient Roman Lime & Crushed-Terracotta Plaster

Cocciopesto flooring is a lime and crushed-terracotta surface related to the Roman material tradition often described as opus signinum. Historically it was used for floors and wall surfaces and, because of the compact lime-based build-up, also appeared in cisterns and other water-related structures. De Ferranti's formulation is described as a natural decorative stucco composed of long-seasoned micronised slaked lime, cocciopesto, selected calcareous filler and non-toxic additives. The warm, granular surface can be used alone or combined with mosaic and other pavement techniques, giving the material a direct connection between construction, colour and decoration.

Cocciopesto Flooring and Roman Pavement Traditions

Within this made-to-order collection, Opus Aeliana introduces rare marble fragments and mosaic detail into the terracotta-rich field, while Opus Signinum presents crushed terracotta, lime and inset marble mosaic more directly. The result is not a conventional tile surface: colour, aggregate, finish and inserted elements form part of one continuous composition. Colour, Texture and Project Specification

Cocciopesto flooring can read as softly mottled, granular or more polished depending on the approved project specification. Its terracotta content brings warm red, pink, ochre and earth tones into the surface, while stone or mosaic fragments can introduce stronger contrast. Sample review is important because aggregate character, colour balance and finishing determine much of the final appearance. Layout, substrate preparation, junctions, borders and suitability for the intended setting should therefore be reviewed as part of the complete floor or wall build-up.
