Neisha Crosland
Fiorellini Medievale Pavement

This medieval stone pavement combines De Ferranti’s signature sage stone, black limestone and carefully selected leathery terracotta in a patterned floor with a contrasting wave-like border. The composition is inspired by floors found in medieval churches, using the relationship between pale green-grey stone, dark limestone and warm cotto to create a clear field-and-border structure. It forms part of De Ferranti’s Pavimenti Collection.

Medieval Stone Pavement in Detail

Fiorellini Medievale Pavement demonstrates the pictorial possibilities of opus sectile, where larger shaped pieces are cut to describe petals, leaves, stems or framing elements. Unlike a conventional tessellated mosaic, the outline of each stone follows the design itself. This allows veining, translucency and colour variation to become part of the image rather than simply background texture.

Large shaped pieces make stone selection especially important. A veined marble may create movement inside one element, while a quieter limestone can provide visual rest around it. The relationship between these materials should be judged across the complete composition, not by approving each stone in isolation.

For related material and pattern studies, compare Floral Scroll Opus Sectile Panel (mod A.55840002) and Expressionist Floral Opus Sectile Panel (mod A.55090005). The wider Opus Sectile – Roman-Inspired Stone Marquetry for Walls & Floors places this design within a broader group of pavements and specialist surface techniques, which can help when coordinating borders, adjacent rooms or a larger material schedule.

Borders, Joints and Specification

The recorded applications include flooring, wall applications, bathrooms, kitchens and tabletops. For the medieval stone pavement, review the composition as a complete drawing or sample so that the larger shaped pieces align correctly with borders and surrounding surfaces. Where wet, exterior or high-use settings are proposed, the selected stone, backing, finish and fixing method should be assessed for that project before specification.
