

This Arpie stone pavement combines reclaimed antique yellow terracotta with volcanic stone in an inlaid composition. The design is inspired by the Michelangelesque decorative language of the Laurentian Library in Florence, translating that historic geometric sensibility into a floor surface with strong contrast between warm clay and darker volcanic material. It forms part of De Ferranti’s Pavimenti Collection.
Arpie uses the essential opus sectile principle of shaping larger pieces to fit the geometry of the composition. The method allows each stone, marble or terracotta element to carry more visual weight than a small mosaic tessera. Natural markings can therefore become part of the pattern, especially where the pieces are large enough for veining and colour shifts to remain visible.
Opus sectile has a different visual logic from tessellated mosaic. Because the pieces are shaped for the motif, a single element may describe an entire petal, feather, leaf or geometric facet. The technique therefore sits close to stone marquetry, with drawing, material choice and cutting accuracy all contributing directly to the composition.
