This Cosmati marble mosaic pavement is beautifully crafted by hand by artisans working within a long-established stone tradition. The composition consists of horizontal and zigzag stripes of black, white and green marbles, hand cut, hand assembled and sensitively aged. It can be considered as a continuous pavement, repeating module or enlarged central composition, with materials, colours and textures adapted to project requirements. De Ferranti can also work with historic marble references where suitable and available.
Cosmati work is associated with the geometric coloured-stone and mosaic pavements of medieval Rome, where small pieces of marble and other precious materials were organised into disciplined bands, knots, circles and interlocking forms. Onde ruvide translates that language into a wave-led arrangement whose roughened, aged surface prevents the geometry from feeling overly pristine. The related Cosmati – Sacred Geometry in Coloured Stone & Smalti collection provides a broader survey of this tradition. Mosaic Onde Border (mod A.54710006C) offers a separate wave-based border approach within Stone & Marble Mosaics.
A Cosmati marble mosaic pavement should be planned as a complete geometry before installation. Establish the direction and width of the zigzag bands, then resolve corners, thresholds and terminations so the pattern remains deliberate. Because black, white and green marbles have strong contrast, grout and joint colour should be reviewed with the actual stones. The aged finish also needs to be judged across a representative area rather than from one tessera. For floors, swimming pools and warm-climate exterior settings, confirm substrate, sealing, slip performance, exposure and maintenance requirements for the selected materials.
