Neisha Crosland
Fiammiferi in White and Porphyry

This porphyry matchstick stone mosaic is assembled in a random fashion. Simple and eye catching, the design shows a random matchstick mosaic. Each stone is carefully selected, cut and then assembled by hand. The slight indentations in the mosaic field enhance the beauty of this mosaic despite its simplicity. Of particular interest is the irregular nature of the small tesserae, they sing and dance. Although randomly placed, there is much to be said about artistic licence here, no single creation will ever be the same. Only the discerning eye would pick this up, a small detail with maximum impact. As is the case with all the De Ferranti Mosaic collections, we are able to fully customise the materials, colours and tailor the mosaics to your space, creating unique and personalised pieces.

Porphyry Matchstick Stone Mosaic and Random Rhythm

The narrow tessera format creates direction without enforcing a strict stripe, giving the surface the informality of scattered fragments while retaining a coherent linear grain. Field Mosaic – 5468A takes randomness into a more fragmentary polychrome field, while Reclaimed Italian Porphyry Mosaic is relevant for projects interested specifically in porphyry. De Ferranti’s Marble & Onyx Collection offers further rare-stone references for adjoining slabs and details.

Variation, Direction and Project Setting Out

A porphyry matchstick stone mosaic should not be judged from one small area alone. The charm lies in the cumulative irregularity of the hand-cut pieces, so representative samples are useful for assessing colour balance, joint spacing and direction. Setting out can be deliberately loose, but principal edges, thresholds and borders still need coordination before fixing. Recorded applications include bathrooms, churches, columns, fireplace surrounds, flooring, furniture, kitchens, leisure and residential interiors, restaurants, swimming pools, tabletops and walling, with warm-climate exterior use also listed. Confirm sealing, substrate, slip requirements and exposure conditions for the specific application.
