This Roman dancer stone mosaic is a reproduction of a mosaic from Rome’s province of Africa Proconsularis, dating to the 4th century. The original is housed in the Museum of Carthage. Made from tiny tesserae of stone and marble, this beautiful panel was adapted by extending the wood fencing and rose bushes to fit the space better. The source belongs to the celebrated late antique mosaic tradition of Roman North Africa, where figural subjects were often integrated with garden, domestic and bathing imagery. Here the adaptation demonstrates an important practical aspect of commissioned mosaic: a historical composition can be extended without simply enlarging the central figure.
