English Flint

At De Ferranti, we are always drawn to materials with depth, provenance and a strong architectural identity, and English flint holds all three in abundance. Quintessentially British and rich in geological character, it is a material that speaks of landscape, history and craft, yet feels entirely at home in contemporary settings.

Our English flint is carefully selected for its tone, translucency and distinctive natural fracture, then expertly worked into refined slabs, tiles and, in selected cases, interlocking formats that allow for a more seamless visual field. Depending on the desired finish, surfaces may retain a hand-knapped texture, alive with movement and irregular beauty, or be dressed with greater precision for a calmer, more uniform appearance. Edges and corner returns are produced in-house to ensure continuity across the installation and a resolved architectural finish.

Sourced locally from the southern chalk belts and developed in collaboration with skilled Norfolk flint-knappers, the material preserves its dark, glass-like lustre while being adapted to the demands of modern design and installation. Suitable for feature walls, fireplaces and exterior applications, English flint offers a rare balance of tactility, durability and timeless character. As with many of our materials, development continues, with new surface treatments and combinations, including flint paired with pyrites, expanding its design potential still further.
