These handmade and handglazed Charcoal Dutch ceramic tiles are created using the traditional techniques of the Delft artisans, but are a totally new concept with modern colours in Charcoal and Pewter. This secret glaze recipe will not even be shared with us! Each tile has subtle variations of patina that make the play of light on a surface that much more interesting. Surface Character of Charcoal Dutch Ceramic Tiles

The glaze creates a deep, near-black field rather than a single uniform colour. Across a laid surface, individual tiles move through charcoal, smoke grey and warm black, with occasional muted green-grey or brown undertones emerging as light crosses the glaze. This variation gives the installation depth and prevents a dark wall from appearing flat or mechanically repeated.

Soft irregularity at the edges, gentle surface undulation and localised pooling of glaze reinforce the handmade character. Used over a larger area, the tiles form a restrained tonal patchwork. In smaller applications, they can introduce a concentrated dark accent around a fireplace or within a bathroom wall scheme.

Dark Glazes within the Delft Tradition

Traditional Delftware is commonly associated with an opaque white ground and cobalt decoration, yet contemporary makers have expanded this ceramic language through monochrome and abstract glazes. Charcoal retains the workshop-led quality associated with Dutch ceramic production while presenting a quieter, more contemporary surface.

The companion Pewter tile provides a lighter related tone, while De Ferranti’s plain colours and glazes offer further tonal surfaces for coordinated or contrasting schemes.

Specification and Layout Guidance

Before ordering, confirm tile dimensions, thickness, quantity, glaze variation and any project-specific installation requirements. A dry layout is advisable so that deeper and lighter tiles can be distributed deliberately across the wall.

The substrate, adhesive, grout joint and cleaning method should be selected for the intended interior application and in accordance with the maker’s guidance. Samples should be assessed under the lighting conditions proposed for the finished room, as the dark glaze responds noticeably to both direct and ambient light.
