Marjory Clinton Midnight Reduction Lustre Tile (162)

This midnight lustre tile from De Ferranti’s personal archive is an original ceramic work by Margery Clinton, combining an inky blue-black ground with broad flashes of pale gold and cream. Its light-reactive surface was developed through an additional reduced-oxygen firing, allowing the metallic effect to form within the glaze rather than sit as a separate applied layer.

Midnight lustre tile as ceramic painting

The composition reads as a painter’s surface first and a tile second, which is particularly apt given Clinton’s early training at Glasgow School of Art. Cloud-like eruptions, looping marks and broken passages of lustre move across the dark field with the freedom of brushwork. A warmer copper tone around parts of the edge gives the square a subtle frame.

Reduction lustre is prized for this changeability. As the light or viewing angle shifts, the pale gestures can move from muted cream to metallic gold, while the ground reveals blue, charcoal and near-black depths. Photography records the composition, but not the full transition between absorption and reflection.

The related Stormfield lustre tile offers another painterly interpretation, while Black Gold concentrates the process into a darker mineral field. The Ruby Lustre Animal Tiles provide an Arts and Crafts counterpoint, and the E-Series Obsidian Metal Glaze Brick translates dark metallic glaze into a repeatable wall format.

Orienting an abstract reduction lustre tile

This midnight lustre tile should be treated as a composed object. Agree its top edge before installation and record the orientation in the setting-out information. It is suited to a framed display, eye-level niche, cabinet interior or protected feature panel where the viewer can approach closely. Test both warm and cool directional light, and confirm mounting, moisture, heat and cleaning requirements for the exact proposed location.
