Afrique – Totem Lattice Low-Relief Tile

This totem lattice tile is a handmade wall tile with a near-embossed, low-relief lattice of diamonds and totem-like motifs, inspired by African wall art and rendered in warm charcoal over a chalky sand base.

Totem lattice tile composition

This 30 x 30 cm ceramic tile combines a rhythmic diamond framework with vertical, mask and totem-inspired emblems that sit within the grid. The linework is bold and graphic, but the relief remains low and restrained, giving the surface an almost embossed quality that catches light softly and adds quiet depth.

Handmade from start to finish, each tile carries natural variation: slight shifts in line weight, tonal changes in the dark glaze, and a gently irregular, artisan finish that keeps the pattern alive rather than overly uniform.

Grout and layout for a relief lattice

Created for wall use, it suits feature panels, splashbacks, niches and stair halls, or full-wall applications where the repeated geometry becomes textile-like. For a sharper, more architectural read, keep grout in a warm grey or soft charcoal. For a softer, more earthen feel, choose a stone-toned grout that blends into the base.

Within the same family, Kasai Lattice uses smaller nested diamonds and checker motifs, while Mudcloth Geometry creates broader horizontal bands. Designers researching historic ceramic rooms can also explore Portuguese azulejos, while the wider De Ferranti ceramic collection provides flatter, glazed and sculptural alternatives.

The totem lattice tile gains clarity when cuts are kept away from the principal vertical emblems. Establish panel edges, outlets and corners on a scaled elevation, then review several tiles under the intended lighting. The grout trial should account for handmade dimensional variation without burying the low-relief detail at the tile edges.
