The Pennello denim blue tile is entirely handmade, with irregular brushstrokes creating a softly varied blue field inspired by the changing colours of Sicily’s Simeto River. The washed tone, rugged terracotta edges and subtle surface texture give it the relaxed character of an aged ceramic rather than a flat industrial finish.
Washed Denim Blue moves between muted blue, greyed indigo and paler brushed passages. These shifts occur within and between tiles, creating depth across larger areas without introducing a formal pattern. The visible direction of the brush and the warmth of the clay body soften the colour, making it easier to combine with timber, limestone, plaster and aged metal.
Within the collection, Pennello Black offers a darker grounding tone, while Pennello Cream provides a light neutral companion. The Sintra Blue Sponged Mottled Tile gives a Portuguese comparison in hand-applied blue variation, and Midnight Delft MC27 presents a deeper handmade blue glaze.
The tile can form a calm floor or wall, frame polychrome Italianate patterns or be combined with neighbouring Pennello colours. De Ferranti’s source record supports interior floors and walls, bathrooms, wet rooms, fireplace surrounds and warm-climate exterior settings, subject to specification. Because the colour varies by hand, samples should be considered together rather than as isolated pieces. Layout, grout and lighting will determine whether the installation reads as a subtle blue field or a more visibly modulated handmade ceramic patchwork surface.
It forms part of the Italianate Handpainted Tiles Collection.
