The Pennello red terracotta tile is entirely handmade, with irregular brushstrokes producing the intense colour associated with red chillies in Moroccan spice markets. The finish is not intended to be perfectly uniform. Variations in pigment, rugged clay edges and slight surface texture give the red field depth and retain the evidence of the hand across every installed square metre of the finished surface.
Red Chillies is the strongest warm note in the Pennello group. The colour can move between vivid red, deeper crimson and warmer clay-influenced areas depending on brush density and firing. Across a larger installation, this variation creates movement without a repeated motif, making the tile useful where colour itself should provide the decorative structure.
Within the range, Pennello Paprika offers an earthier red-orange, while Pennello Saffron supplies a lighter yellow-orange companion. Neisha Crosland’s Pollen in Orange and Red develops warm colour through angular pattern, and Can-Can in Clementine provides a more botanical handmade terracotta surface.
The tile can be used as a complete floor or wall, a border around patterned ceramics or a concentrated colour panel. It works with dark timber, blackened metal, limestone, plaster and warm marbles. De Ferranti’s source record supports interior floors, walls, bathrooms, wet rooms, fireplace surrounds and exterior use, subject to climate, installation method and project confirmation. Samples should be reviewed together because irregular brushwork and tonal range are defining characteristics rather than defects.
It forms part of the Italianate Handpainted Tiles Collection.
