The Nora polychrome terracotta tile is hand-painted in a Southern Italian artisan studio with ornate floral and geometric decoration in off-white, red, green and black. De Ferranti identifies the pattern as Sicilian in origin and 18th century in character. Four tiles meet to complete the repeat, producing a balanced composition with radial structure and richly layered colour.

The palette reflects the strong contrasts associated with Sicilian decorative ceramics, where green and red are often contained by darker outlines and separated by a light ground.
