Bone and horn inlay is a traditional craft practiced throughout the Middle East and India. De Ferranti works with an historic Indian workshop to develop these decorative inlaid panels. These beautiful, and surprisingly hardwearing materials, are suitable for low traffic floors (bathrooms), as a field material or as borders, for walls and as detailing in furniture.

Bone Horn Inlay Tiles for Pattern and Detail

These bone and horn briquettes bring together three graphic arrangements in one product family. Rectangolo uses elongated rectangular pieces in a striped chequer rhythm. Harlequin turns the contrast into a diamond field. Checkerboard works with smaller squares for a more regular black and pale composition. In each case, the strength of the design comes from the balance between the dark horn and the creamy natural tone of the pale inlay.

As bone horn inlay tiles, the briquettes are especially useful where a project requires pattern, contrast and hand-worked detail without relying on a printed or mass-produced surface. The slight irregularity of the cut pieces, the tonal shifts in the pale sections and the depth of the horn all give the surface a crafted quality that suits intimate interiors, feature areas and bespoke decorative schemes.

Design Use and Commissioning

Bone & Horn Briquettes are best understood as a decorative project material rather than a standard tile range. They may be considered for walls, borders, selected low-traffic bathroom floors, furniture inlays, cabinet fronts, screens and inset panels, subject to specification, substrate, fixing method and expected wear.
