Waxed Terracotta is a tactile evolution of traditional fired earth, where handmade terracotta tiles are painted, fired and then carefully waxed to produce a surface with a distinctive, almost leathery feel. This finishing process deepens the natural tones of the clay while imparting a soft sheen and a mellow, timeworn character.
Like all true terracotta - from the Latin terra cocta, meaning baked earth - these tiles are formed from clay and fired to create a porous earthenware body. Each piece is handmade, and as such retains the marks of its making: subtle finger impressions, gently rippled edges and natural variation in hue that give the surface authenticity and warmth.
The additional waxing stage enriches the colour, enhances durability and creates a sensuous, touchable finish unlike conventional sealed terracotta. The result is a surface that feels aged yet refined, with a patina that improves as it is lived with.
Suitable for both walls and floors, Waxed Terracotta lends itself particularly well to interiors where material character is paramount - hallways, kitchens, dining rooms, wine cellars and feature spaces. Its warmth also allows it to sit comfortably alongside stone, timber and metal within layered architectural schemes.
A collection defined not by uniformity, but by the beauty of variation and the quiet luxury of hand-finished clay.
