Plain Colours & Glazes

Plain Colours and Glazes is the quiet backbone of decorative ceramics. From provincial French field tiles to lustrous glazes from Italy, Portugal and Spain, and on to the Far East, this sub-category celebrates the power of a single colour, a single surface, and the endless nuance that comes from the kiln.

Across different ceramic cultures, “plain” rarely means simple. The French tradition often favours provincial, softly varied glazes used as calm fields or mixed to create gentle patchwork effects. Italian makers frequently pair plain glazed tiles with decorative inserts and borders, while Portuguese and Spanish schemes use solid colour as the anchor for pattern, framing decors and giving rhythm to walls and floors.

The language of glaze is vast: matte, gloss, satin, chalky and fresco-like finishes, as well as sprayed, hand-poured, brushed, and deliberately mottled surfaces that carry movement and depth. Colour ranges from understated minerals and washed pastels through to saturated tones, burnished metallics, silvers, and pearlised finishes that catch light like jewellery.

Ideal for field tiling, borders, panelling, kitchens and bathrooms, fireplaces, stair risers, and any interior where surface and tone matter as much as pattern.
